Customs data showed that in December 2023, China's aluminum plate/sheet and strip exports were 243,300 mt, up 2 percentage points MoM and 1 percentage point YoY. The monthly export volume is still fluctuating in the range of 200,000-250,000 mt. In 2023, China exported a total of 2.7729 million mt of aluminum plates/sheets and strips, down by 798,600 mt compared with 2022 and down by 184,500 mt compared with 2021.

The top five export provinces of aluminum plate/sheet and strip in December were Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai. The above five places exported a total of 175,000 mt of aluminum plate/sheet and strip in December, accounting for about 72% of all. At the same time, the above places are also the top five export provinces for aluminum plate/sheet and strips throughout the year. In 2023, the above five places exported a total of 1.949 million mt of aluminum plate/sheet and strip, accounting for a total of 70.3%. The registration structure remains stable with minor changes.

In terms of export target countries, the target countries with export volumes of aluminum plate /sheet and strip exceeding 10,000 mt in December include Mexico, South Korea, the United States, Vietnam, Thailand, Canada, and Australia. The above-mentioned countries are all among the top 10 target countries for aluminum plate/sheet and strip exports in 2023. It can be seen that the structure of aluminum plate and strip export target countries is also very stable.

SMM believes that although the exports of aluminum plate/sheet and strip continued to increase MoM in the fourth quarter of 2023, the increase was relatively low and was not enough to represent a reversal in the exports of aluminum plate/sheet and strip. Most aluminum plate/sheet and strip companies reported that there were still no signs of recovery in the aluminum plate/sheet and strip export. In the first half of 2024, the exports of aluminum plate/sheet and strips are expected to remain at a low level.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] US, EU, Canada and Japan Aluminium Associations Raise Concerns Over China’s Subsidy Support
Aluminum associations from the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan highlighted OECD data showing that global aluminum-sector subsidies totaled USD118.3 billion during 2005-2024, with China accounting for USD101.4 billion, or 86% of the total. In 2024 alone, China received USD10.2 billion of the sector’s USD11.1 billion global subsidies. Industry groups noted that China’s share of global primary aluminum output has risen from 11% to 61% over the past two decades, with subsidy-supported growth extending into downstream processing and recycling. The associations called for coordinated measures, including import monitoring systems, tariff alignment and potential scrap export restrictions, to strengthen supply-chain security and support fair competition.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] ALFED Launches 2026-2027 Strategic Framework to Strengthen UK Aluminum Industry
The Aluminum Federation (ALFED) launched its 2026-2027 Positions & Strategic Priorities Framework during a House of Lords reception in London. Discussions focused on energy competitiveness, recycling and remelting capacity, circular economy development, CBAM alignment and supply-chain resilience. UK Industry Minister Chris McDonald highlighted the importance of expanding domestic aluminum processing, recycling and value-added manufacturing. ALFED noted that the UK aluminum industry supports more than 108,000 jobs and contributes around £9.4 billion in GVA, while continuing to face challenges from high energy costs, investment pressures and evolving trade dynamics. Industry participants called for stronger policy support to enhance long-term competitiveness and resilience.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Oklahoma Aluminum Smelter Project Becomes Key Issue in Governor Race
The proposed aluminum smelter project in Inola, Oklahoma, has become a major political issue after Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Gentner Drummond filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the development. Concerns include potential impacts on electricity and water supplies, air quality and foreign ownership involvement. The project has received a USD255 million state incentive package and is viewed by supporters as a strategic investment that could create jobs and strengthen domestic aluminum supply for US manufacturing and defense sectors. Markets believe the project’s future will depend on political, environmental and resource-related considerations as legal proceedings continue.
